When it comes to breasts and breast tissue, we know that it is not uncommon for breasts to be asymmetrical, with one breast being larger or a slightly different shape than the other. However, about 6 percent of women have what is known as ectopic breast tissue, or tissue that grows in areas other than the usual location of the breasts. This tissue mass can cause cosmetic issues and discomfort, depending on its location, and surgical intervention may be needed.
What Is Ectopic Breast Tissue?
You may have heard the term “ectopic” in the context of pregnancy. There, it means a pregnancy in which fertilization occurs outside of the uterus. The term “ectopic” basically means a type of tissue growing in a place where it normally does not. Ectopic breast tissue, also known as supernumerary breast tissue, is breast tissue that develops in locations other than that of the standard breast area.
While most commonly found in the armpit area (axilla), ectopic breast tissue can develop anywhere along the “milk line” which runs from the armpit down to the groin, meaning masses of this breast tissue can appear in the armpits, abdomen, and thighs.
This tissue usually appears as lumpy breast tissue, but in extreme cases may look like complete breast-like masses or even the formation of additional nipples. While this excess tissue can cause cosmetic concerns, it is not usually a health risk. However, it can cause painful swelling and discomfort, especially during hormonal changes, such as menstruation.
How To Treat Ectopic Breast Tissue
Ectopic breast tissue that is causing discomfort or cosmetic concerns can be treated through surgical excision to remove the excess tissue. This can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or combined with a breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction to improve comfort and overall appearance of the breasts.
