Male Breast Reduction
For male patients, the development of breast tissue can be quite distressing. This unwelcome symptom can cause intense feelings of self-consciousness and embarrassment, especially at the gym, at the beach, or during intimacy. Gynecomastia can be treated with male breast reduction here in Columbia, Maryland. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Chang uses the least invasive techniques possible to create sculpted, natural-looking results for male patients.
The Basics of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a relatively common condition that occurs when breast tissue develops on the male chest. Gynecomastia commonly starts during adolescence, but it also affects a sizeable population of adults. The development of male breast tissue can occur secondary to an underlying condition, such as a hormonal imbalance, or as the result of obesity. Very often, however, it’s idiopathic—which means its cause is not known.
How Is Gynecomastia Treated?
The treatment indicated for gynecomastia depends on the severity of the condition. Male breast reduction is typically less involved than breast reduction for women. During your consultation, Dr. Chang evaluates your condition and makes a recommendation based on your specific concerns. The 2 main options are:
- Liposuction: Simple liposuction of the chest can remove fat deposits and leave behind a sculpted appearance with nearly no visible scarring.
- Surgical excision: More severe cases may require excision of the entire mammary gland. Although more invasive than liposuction, the excision technique can create results that last indefinitely and still minimize scarring.
- Skin tailoring: Sometimes skin tailoring is necessary to maximally improve the overall contour and shape of the male breast.
