Dermal fillers have grown in popularity over the last few years, ranking as the second most common nonsurgical aesthetic procedure performed year after year, with BOTOX being the most common.
This minimally invasive procedure helps address early signs of aging, such as lost facial volume, fine lines and wrinkles, with little to no downtime. However, that doesn’t mean you are free and clear to do whatever you want after having dermal filler injections. In fact, to get the most out of your dermal fillers, you may need to avoid the outdoors for a little while!
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Most dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid. This material provides the plumping effect that fillers offer to increase volume or smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Unfortunately, UV rays from the sun and tanning beds can degrade both natural levels of hyaluronic acid and the material used in your dermal filler treatment. This degradation can affect the results of your dermal filler, worsen or cause skin reactions, and slow down the healing process. In general, you want to avoid exposure to UV rays for at least a week, ideally two, after your dermal filler treatments.
Taking Care of Your Dermal Filler Results
While dermal filler treatments do not require any specific downtime, they require time to heal. During the healing process, there are some things to keep in mind.
- Avoid sun exposure for at least one week after your dermal filler procedure.
- Always wear an SPF of at least 50, even if you are not intending on going out in the sun.
- If you do go out, shield your face with a hat.
- Avoid strenuous activity and increases in body temperature for at least 48 hours as this can increase the risk of bruising, swelling, and discomfort.
- Follow your providers’ after-care instructions.
Dermal fillers for both the face and the lips offer a minimally invasive option that helps turn back the clock and deliver the results you are looking for. While there is no downtime with these fillers, it is important to avoid sun exposure immediately following your dermal filler treatment.
