Weight Loss Management FAQs
Do you take insurance?
Yes, the front desk will double check if we take your specific insurance. We try to do a verification of benefits for each patient to see what type of coverage you have, however, this is not always completely accurate and we recommend patients to call their insurance to double check if obesity is covered. Otherwise you could get an unnecessary bill.
Will I be prescribed medication?
Possibly, that is an option you can discuss with the nurse practitioner. Possible medications may include Wegovy (Semaglutide), Zepbound (Tirzepatide), Contrave, and Phentermine, among others. Mounjaro and Ozempic are for Diabetics and can be an option if you have Diabetes. There are also options for patients who don’t have medication coverage including compounded medications and may be a possibility if mutually agreed with the provider that compounded medications would be a good option for you.
How do I know if I qualify for the weight loss management program or medications?
If you have a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater you qualify for the program and possibly weight loss medications. If you have a BMI of 27 or higher with a co-morbidity such as hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), diabetes or prediabetes), etc. you qualify for the program and possibly weight loss medications. BMI is figured out by a calculation using your height and weight and will be assessed prior to making an appointment.
Will my insurance cover the medication?
That depends on your insurance prescription coverage and you can find out more by calling your insurance or we will find out for you when prescribing the medication.
What will my first visit look like?
The first visit is typically 60 minutes as our nurse practitioner is getting to know you and your weight journey, reviewing your labs, history, physical activity, and exercise. Also, a body composition will be done to assess your muscle mass, body fat, and visceral fat. We will discuss your goals and medication options if we think that would be helpful and safe for your weight loss journey.
What will my follow ups look like?
We will be setting small goals to help you reach your bigger goals. Review your body composition and continue to track your progress and changes. Follow up on medications and side effects if they are prescribed. Typically, follow up appointments can range anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks and follow up appointments take 20 to 30 minutes.
Am I able to do Telehealth appointments?
Yes, that is a possibility as long as you have the technological capabilities, and are in the state of Maryland.
