Benefits of Liposuction
The number and location of fat cells in your body are largely determined by genetics, while lifestyle choices influence how large those fat cells become. That’s why even with a healthy diet and regular exercise, some areas of stubborn fat can remain resistant to change. Liposuction can target and remove these localized fat deposits to create smoother, more refined body contours.
Some of the key benefits of liposuction include:
- Targeted fat reduction in areas resistant to diet and exercise.
- More balanced, sculpted body contours.
- Improved fit and appearance in clothing.
- Long-lasting results with proper weight maintenance.
- Can be combined with other body contouring procedures for enhanced results.
- Boosted confidence and body image after achieving a more sculpted body shape.
- A finishing touch on weight loss efforts.
Treatment Areas
Liposuction can be performed on virtually any area of the body, making it a popular procedure for many men and women. Some of the most common treatment areas for liposuction include:
- Chin
- Neck
- Upper arms
- Chest
- Back and bra line
- Buttocks
- Abdomen
- Waist
- Hips
- Thighs

Good Candidates for Liposuction
Liposuction is ideal for men and women who are close to their goal weight but struggle with stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet or exercise. It’s important to understand that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. The best candidates are those who are healthy, realistic about their results and committed to maintaining a stable weight before and after surgery.
You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you:
- Are at or near your ideal body weight but have localized fat deposits.
- Have good skin elasticity.
- Are in good overall physical and mental health.
- Do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery.
- Have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve.
- Want to enhance body contours in areas such as the waist, hips, thighs, arms or chin.
Your Liposuction Consultation
During your liposuction consultation, you’ll meet with Dr. Chang or Dr. Wang to discuss your goals, areas of concern and what you hope to achieve from surgery. Your plastic surgeon will perform a thorough physical evaluation, review your medical history and discuss your various body contouring options. Together, you’ll develop a personalized surgical plan designed to help you achieve your unique cosmetic goals.
In some cases, your plastic surgeon may recommend combining liposuction with other procedures. In fact, liposuction is one of the most common “partner procedures” because it can be easily added to many other surgeries without affecting the recovery process. Our plastic surgeons commonly use liposuction to enhance the results of tummy tuck surgery, neck lift surgery and mommy makeover procedures, among others.
Preparing for Liposuction
Once your surgery is scheduled, we will provide you with detailed preoperative instructions to help make your procedure and recovery as smooth and successful as possible.
In the weeks leading up to your procedure, you may be asked to:
- Maintain a stable, healthy weight.
- Stop smoking and avoid nicotine products to promote proper healing.
- Avoid taking certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding risk, such as NSAIDs and some vitamins and herbal supplements.
- Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after surgery and assist you for at least the first 24 hours.
It’s also important to follow your surgeon’s specific guidelines about eating, drinking or fasting before your procedure. Taking these steps helps to ensure that your surgery goes smoothly and that you’re set up for a comfortable, straightforward recovery.

Your Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day. The surgery can take a little as 1 hour or as long as around 5 hours, depending on the size and number of areas being treated and the amount of fat removed. If you’ve chosen to include a tummy tuck or other procedure with liposuction, treatment time will be longer than with liposuction alone.
Your plastic surgeon will begin by carefully making a few small, discreet incisions near the treatment areas. A thin tube called a cannula is then inserted and used to gently break up and remove excess fat. Once the desired contour is achieved, the incisions are closed and a compression garment is applied to help minimize swelling and support your new shape.
Liposuction Recovery
Because liposuction can be performed on various parts of the body, the recovery process varies from person to person and can depend on the specifics of your treatment. If only a small area is targeted, such as the chin, neck or knees, only 2 or 3 days of downtime may be necessary. Larger areas, such as the abdomen or thighs, may require at least a week of rest and reduced activity at home. Swelling, bruising and discomfort are typical but manageable with medication. Although most people can return to work after 1 week, it may take up to a month before a patient may fully return to his or her regular activities.
Liposuction Results
You’ll notice an improvement in your body’s shape soon after surgery, though swelling and bruising are normal during the early recovery period and can hide initial results. As swelling gradually subsides over the following weeks, your results will continue to become more visible, revealing a smoother, more sculpted appearance.
Final results typically develop within 3 to 6 months as your body fully heals and residual swelling diminishes. The treated areas will look slimmer and more defined, and clothes should fit more comfortably.
Because liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treated areas, your results can last for many years. However, maintaining a stable weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise is key, since significant weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells to enlarge, potentially affecting your final outcome.
With healthy lifestyle habits in place, however, liposuction results can be very long-lasting.
Liposuction FAQ
How much does liposuction cost in Baltimore & D.C.?
The price of liposuction varies depending on the extent of the procedure and if more than one area is targeted. For this reason, we will be able to provide you with an accurate liposuction cost estimate at the time of your consultation. We are also pleased to be able to offer financing options for patients who are interested.
Can liposuction help me lose weight?
Liposuction is not a solution for those who are significantly overweight and it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction works best on patients who are at or near healthy weights but would like to reduce small, stubborn fat deposits. Although liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery, many patients find that their improved bodies help motivate them to live more healthily after the procedures — a great added benefit!
What weight do you need to be to get liposuction?
There’s no specific weight requirement for liposuction, but the best candidates are generally within about 20 to 30 pounds of their ideal body weight. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight before and after surgery helps to ensure the safest procedure and the longest-lasting results.
Will liposuction address sagging skin?
For skin that’s significantly loose or sagging, an additional procedure, such as tummy tuck, may be recommended. Surgical procedures remove excess skin as well as fat, redraping it for a smooth, streamlined final result. During your consultation, Dr. Chang or Dr. Wang can help you decide whether another surgery can better create the results you want.
What are the risks associated with liposuction?
Like any surgical procedure, liposuction carries some risks, though serious complications are uncommon when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. Potential risks include temporary swelling, bruising, numbness or contour irregularities as the body heals. Less common risks may include infection, fluid accumulation, changes in skin sensation or uneven results. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you in more detail at your consultation, as well as the steps we take to prioritize your safety and optimal results.
How long will liposuction results last?
Your body won’t generate new fat cells, so the effects of your liposuction procedure could potentially be long-lasting. However, the fat cells that remain can get bigger if you don’t stick to a good diet and exercise regimen. We encourage patients to adopt or maintain a healthy lifestyle to get the most out of their results, which can last indefinitely.

Liposuction Baltimore – Expert Baltimore Body Contouring
Liposuction is not a magic solution, but diet and exercise sometimes seem to hit a wall. Stubborn fat pockets frequently remain, not only causing annoyance but also, when you’re otherwise healthy and in good shape. At the Columbia Aesthetic in Baltimore, liposuction is a procedure to get rid of those areas and style a body to make you feel balanced, and natural.
Why Liposuction?
Patients choose liposuction not because they want to change everything, but because they want to refine what’s already there. Common goals include:
- Flattening the abdomen or waistline
- Slimming thighs or arms for better proportion
- Contouring the neck or chin for a sharper profile
- Reducing stubborn fat in areas resistant to exercise
Our Approach to Body Contouring
Every body is unique, which means every treatment plan is different. Dr. Chang and the team emphasize:
- Careful evaluation of your goals and body type
- Modern liposuction techniques that focus on precision
- Prioritizing safety and natural-looking outcomes
- Support before, during, and after surgery
How the Process Works
Liposuction isn’t a mystery—patients feel reassured when they understand each step:
- Consultation – A detailed discussion of your areas of concern and desired results.
- Custom Plan – Choice of technique and treatment zones tailored to your needs.
- Procedure – Performed in our accredited facility with advanced technology.
- Recovery – Guidance and follow-up care as swelling subsides and results become visible.
Results You Can Expect
The final product is not the matter of showcasing man-made appearances—it is a matter of proportion. Patients often observe that their wardrobes fit better, they have a more recognizable figure and their self-esteem has improved. Healing progresses slowly allowing the patient to look progressively better without violating the natural look and results tend to last.
