Benefits of Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty can be an excellent way to improve comfort during exercises like running and cycling. It can also help people feel more confident during sexual activity, and surveys have shown a satisfaction rate for the procedure at over 90%.
Common reasons women consider labiaplasty include:
- Discomfort or irritation during exercise or daily activities
- Pain or pulling sensation during intercourse
- Chafing from tight clothing, swimsuits, or underwear
- Difficulty maintaining hygiene due to excess tissue
- Changes in labial appearance after childbirth
- Age-related tissue elongation
- Congenital asymmetry or naturally enlarged labia
- Self-consciousness about appearance in intimate settings

Ideal Candidates for Labiaplasty
Many women may be good candidates for labiaplasty, particularly those experiencing physical discomfort or emotional distress related to the size, shape or asymmetry of the labia. The procedure is typically performed on patients over the age of 18 who are physically healthy and have fully developed anatomy.
Ideal candidates often include women who experience chronic irritation, chafing or discomfort during exercise, intercourse or while wearing certain clothing. Others may have difficulty with hygiene due to excess tissue, or notice changes in the labia after childbirth, weight fluctuations or aging. Some women have naturally enlarged or asymmetrical labia and seek surgery for long-standing concerns rather than recent changes.
During your consultation, Dr. Chang or Dr. Wang will carefully listen to your concerns and goals and help to determine if labiaplasty could be the best solution for you.
Labiaplasty Techniques
Our surgeons may use different labiaplasty techniques depending on your anatomy, the degree of excess tissue and your desired cosmetic outcome. The goal is always to reduce discomfort while preserving natural contour and sensation.
- Trim Labiaplasty: This technique removes tissue along the outer edge of the labia minora to reduce length and create a smoother, more symmetrical appearance. It is often chosen when there is darkened or thickened tissue along the edge that the patient would like addressed.
- Wedge Labiaplasty: In this technique, a V-shaped “wedge” of tissue is removed from the thickest portion of the labia minora. The remaining edges are then carefully sutured together. This approach preserves the natural outer border of the labia while reducing overall size. It is often selected for patients who want volume reduction without altering the natural edge contour.
Your Consultation
During your consult, your surgeon will talk with you about your goals for vaginal rejuvenation. As part of the consultation, a physical examination will be performed and we’ll discuss your goals in detail. It may feel uncomfortable to talk about such an intimate area, but you can feel reassured that our conversation will be compassionate, discreet and professional.
If we find that you are a good candidate for labiaplasty, we’ll discuss next steps including pricing and scheduling. Feel free to take the time you need to decide whether you want to move forward or not. You will never feel any pressure from us and we are happy to answer any follow up questions you may have thought of after your consultation.
Your Labiaplasty Procedure
Labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will return home the same day. The procedure itself typically takes about one hour, depending on the technique used and whether any additional procedures are being performed at the same time.
For your comfort, the surgery is usually performed under twilight (IV) sedation or deep sedation. In some cases, local anesthesia with oral medication may be appropriate. Your surgeon and anesthesia provider will determine the safest and most comfortable option based on your medical history and preferences.
During the procedure, excess labial tissue is carefully reshaped and reduced according to the planned technique. Dissolvable sutures are used, so there is no need for removal later. Great care is taken to preserve sensation, maintain natural contour and minimize visible scarring.
After surgery, you will spend a short time in recovery before being discharged home with detailed post-operative instructions. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Most patients are able to walk the same day, although you should plan to rest and limit activity during the initial healing period.
Recovery after Labiaplasty
Our surgeons perform labiaplasty in our Quad A certified outpatient surgery center. You’ll return home the same day after a brief monitoring period in recovery. Mild to moderate swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal during the first one to two weeks.
Your surgeon will ask that you rest and apply cold compresses intermittently for the first several days to help control swelling. Keeping the area clean and dry is important, and you’ll receive detailed guidance regarding hygiene, showering and incision care. Dissolvable sutures are typically used, so there is no need for suture removal.
Most patients are able to resume light daily activities within a few days, but strenuous exercise, cycling, running and sexual activity should be avoided for approximately 4 to 6 weeks to allow proper healing. Wearing loose clothing and supportive undergarments can also improve comfort during recovery.
Swelling gradually improves over several weeks, and final results become more apparent as tissues fully heal. Your surgeon will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress and ensure you are healing properly.
Labiaplasty Results
You will notice a visible reduction in excess tissue immediately after surgery, but early swelling can make the area appear fuller or uneven at first. Bruising and swelling are most noticeable during the first one to two weeks and gradually improve over time.
Initial results are typically more apparent around 3 to 4 weeks after surgery, once the majority of swelling has subsided and incisions have begun to soften. At this stage, most women experience significant improvement in comfort during daily activities and exercise.
Final results generally become fully visible around 3 to 6 months after surgery, once all residual swelling has resolved and the tissue has completely settled. Incision lines continue to fade over time and are typically well concealed within the natural contours of the labia.
In addition to cosmetic improvement, many patients report long-term relief from irritation, chafing and discomfort, along with increased confidence.
Labiaplasty Surgery FAQ
How much does labiaplasty cost in Maryland?
Many people are surprised to see how affordable labiaplasty can be, given how much it can improve both confidence and comfort. We work hard to make our pricing competitive and to provide strong value in everything we offer. You will be provided with a detailed quote including surgeon’s fee, anesthesia fees, facility fees, and all other charges following your consultation.
Is the cost of labiaplasty covered by insurance?
In most cases, labiaplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. However, if the surgery is medically necessary – for example, to relieve chronic irritation, pain or functional issues that interfere with daily activities – some insurance plans may provide coverage or partial reimbursement. Coverage criteria vary widely by insurer, and documentation from your provider may be required.
How do I find the best labiaplasty surgeon near me?
Labiaplasty is a highly specialized plastic surgery procedure and in our opinion, only plastic surgeons with extensive experience should perform it. This is one surgery that many surgeons do not post to their photo galleries. An experienced labiaplasty surgeon will be able to show you prior patient results at your consultation.
Is labiaplasty surgery painful?
After any surgical procedure, you should anticipate some amount of discomfort as you heal. How you experience this pain is highly individualized. We will prescribe pain medication and work closely with you to ensure that you avoid infections and other potential complications as you recover. After just a few days, you should be fully back to most activities except sexual intercourse.
What’s the best age to get a labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is typically performed on women over the age of 18, once development is complete. Outside of this guideline, there is no “perfect” age, and the best time is when you are physically healthy, experiencing symptoms or concerns and feel confident in your decision. Some women pursue labiaplasty in their 20s or 30s, while others seek treatment after childbirth or later in life due to age-related changes.
How long do labiaplasty results last?
Labiaplasty results are long-lasting. Once excess tissue is removed and reshaped, it does not grow back. While natural aging and childbirth can affect tissue over time, most women enjoy permanent improvement in comfort and appearance.
