Breast Lift
A Beauty That Comes
From Feeling Confident
Over time, factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes and aging can cause breasts to sag or lose their youthful shape. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape the breasts, restoring a firmer, more youthful contour. Whether your goal is to correct sagging, improve symmetry or enhance the overall appearance of your breasts, a breast lift can help you feel more confident in your figure and your clothing.
At Columbia Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, our plastic surgeons Dr. Eric Chang and Dr. Jessica Wang specialize in breast enhancement procedures like breast lifts. They work closely with each patient to custom-tailor the procedure to best meet individual goals and needs and are in close communication with each patient from start to finish.

Benefits of Breast Lift Surgery
A breast lift can result in firmer, more youthful looking breasts, whether sagging is the result of natural aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, massive weight loss or bariatric surgery or a combination of these factors. Our Baltimore patients find that a breast lift can come with a wide range of benefits, both cosmetically and emotionally:
- Restored youthful contours. By reshaping and lifting the breasts, this procedure creates a firmer and perkier look and feel.
- Improved nipple position. Nipples are repositioned to a more central, natural location for balanced and flattering results.
- Better-fitting clothing. Many patients notice bras, swimwear and everyday clothing fit more comfortably and attractively.
- Boosted self-confidence. Restoring the shape and position of your breasts can enhance self-esteem and body confidence.
- Highly customizable. A breast lift can be combined with implants to add volume and achieve a fuller, more proportionate look.
- Long-lasting improvements. A breast lift helps maintain a lifted, youthful shape for many years.
Who’s a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?
Women who wish to address sagging or drooping breasts or mild asymmetry can be good candidates for a breast lift. Our plastic surgeons recommend that breast lift candidates also:
- Are in good overall health.
- Are at a healthy, stable weight.
- Do not smoke or are willing to quit prior to surgery.
- Have adequate skin elasticity.
- Have realistic expectations.
Should I Get a Breast Lift with or without Implants?
Keep in mind that a breast lift on its own will not affect the size of your breasts. If you are looking for an increase in volume while also addressing breast ptosis or sagging, a breast lift with breast implants is likely the better choice for you.
If you are unsure about whether or not combining a breast lift and augmentation could be right for you, let your surgeon know during your consultation that you are considering this option. Dr. Chang or Dr. Wang can help you decide on a breast enhancement plan that will best meet your specific goals.

Sedation Anesthesia Benefits
Did you know you can have breast lift surgery under sedation anesthesia and avoid the grogginess and risks that can accompany general anesthesia? Recover faster, increase comfort, and feel more assured with sedation anesthesia at our practice.
Your Breast Lift Consultation
Our goal is to provide patients with a friendly and relaxing environment, as well as a fulfilling experience from start to finish. At your consultation, you will be given all the time you need to have all of your questions about a breast lift answered, as well as any concerns about the procedure addressed.
After your surgeon learns about you and your goals, they will describe in plain language what to expect during a breast lift procedure, as well as review your surgical options, such as adding implants to your lift and the specific techniques used.
Your surgeon will also perform a physical exam to ensure a breast lift is the best procedure for your particular circumstance, and will discuss the potential risks and complications of this procedure so that you feel confident and well-informed.
Benefits of Our Short-Scar Approach
At Columbia Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, our plastic surgeons almost exclusively utilize what is known as the “short-care” or “vertical” breast lift technique. This technique can reduce healing times and lead to breasts that are fuller and remain firmer longer than a traditional “anchor” pattern breast lift.
Although the short-scar, or “vertical” breast lift has been popular in Europe for over two decades, the technique has gained popularity in America only during the past few years. Our surgeons believe that a short scar breast lift has several key advantages, including:
- Reduced operating times.
- Less scarring.
- Increase in blood supply to the skin, resulting in fewer problems with wound healing.
- A fuller, more youthful-looking breast shape.
- Breast shape that lasts longer with less bottoming out of the breast over time.
The Procedure
A typical breast lift procedure can be completed in 1 to 3 hours, depending on the specifics of your surgery, and is performed under general anesthesia at our accredited surgery center. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours.
During a short-scar breast lift, your plastic surgeon will carefully make incisions that are limited to around the areola and a single vertical line down to the breast crease, avoiding the longer horizontal incision used in traditional techniques. This approach allows for effective lifting and reshaping of the breast while minimizing the amount of visible scarring. Your surgeon will then remove excess skin, reposition the nipple and areola to a more youthful position, and reshape the breast tissue for a firmer, perkier contour.
If you choose to include breast implants with your lift, your surgeon will place the implants during the same procedure, which may add as little as 30 minutes to your overall procedure time.
Recovery after a Breast Lift
Recovery from a breast lift is similar to recovery from other surgical procedures in that you need to rest and take it easy. Swelling, bruising, discomfort and temporary numbness or loss of sensation are normal during the first stage of recovery. These symptoms should gradually improve in the coming days and weeks and can be managed with pain medication and rest.
We ask that you fully rest for at least two days after your breast enhancement procedure. Once those days have passed, light movement is okay, as long as you take it easy. Lightly walking around the house is encouraged to promote healthy blood flow and minimize the risk of complications.
Plan to take 1 to weeks off from work, and avoid strenuous physical activity for 4 to 6 weeks or until your surgeon clears you. After around 6 weeks, you should be fully healed and back to your usual activities.

Your Breast Lift Results
While you should notice an immediate change to your breast shape and position after your breast lift, results will take time to continue developing and improving. Around the 3-month mark, you should have a good idea of what your final outcome will look like, though it can take 6 months or more for breast lift results to fully develop.
Of course, there is no way to completely stop the natural aging process or effects of gravity on the body, but breast lift results can help to slow this process and are generally very long-lasting. Maintaining a healthy, stable weight and keeping up with healthy lifestyle habits such as not smoking can help to prolong your results and get the most out of your breast lift and new look.
Breast Lift FAQ
How much does a breast lift cost in Maryland?
As with virtually all cosmetic surgeries, a number of factors can influence the total price. In addition to the cost of the surgery itself, other items such as anesthesia, facility fees and recovery garments can add to the price. We discuss the cost of a breast lift in detail with each patient and provide a price quote.
If you have concerns about making a breast lift fit into your budget, talk to us about our financing options.
Will insurance pay for a breast lift?
Most health insurance plans do not cover the cost of a breast lift, since it is considered to be an elective procedure. However, in some rare cases where a breast lit may be considered a medical necessity, some insurance plans might cover some of the cost. Call the number listed on the back of your insurance card for more information about your specific plan coverage.
How do I find the best cosmetic surgeon for a breast lift near me?
Start with online research, looking for qualifications like board certification with the American Board of Plastic Surgery, affiliations with medical associations, hospital privileges and client reviews. Using this information, narrow down the possibilities to your top two or three picks. Then, schedule consultations with each of them to get a feel for how they work and how they view your procedure. Discuss your motivations and expectations and look at their before and after photos of breast lifts that they have completed in the past. Once you have spoken with all of them, select the one who makes you feel comfortable, aligns with your goals and is the most qualified to help you.
How much pain will I experience after a breast lift?
Because everyone experiences pain in different ways, we cannot specify how much you will feel after a breast lift. Keep in mind that, like all surgical procedures, breast lifts do come with a recovery period and some discomfort and tenderness as your body heals. You may also experience swelling, bruising, tingling, numbness or other similar sensations. Many people report that the majority of these side effects resolve within several weeks and are easily managed with the proper prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Are there risks associated with breast lifts?
Breast lifts are generally safe procedures, but that does not mean that they are without risks or potential complications. As with any surgery, there is a chance you could develop an infection, have an allergic reaction or experience excess bleeding. Watch for signs of problems and seek medical attention at the first negative symptom. Don’t hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions or concerns at all at any stage of the recovery process following your breast lift.
How long does a breast lift last?
Breast lift results can last for many years or even decades, although the effects of natural aging and things like future pregnancies or significant weight fluctuations can affect results over time.
